A short summary of Joan's Life

Created by Robert 3 years ago

Mum was born 25th December 1931, at home in Orchard Yard, Warsop, weighing 7lb 7oz – sometime after, the family moved to Fitzherbert Street in Warsop.  Her name should have been Jean, but due to her father spelling it wrong, she became Joan Bletcher.  Her parents, Harry & Edna Bletcher, had six daughters in all; Marjorie, my Mum Joan, Betty, Sylvia, Enid and Gillian.

Mum went to Hett’s Lane School aged 4, and moved to Sherwood Street Girls School aged 7, before moving to Burn’s Lane Girls School aged 11 until she was 14 years old.  She then left school, to start work as a Winder and the Lawn Mills on Rosemary Street, Mansfield.  It was here that she met our Dad, George Jevons – they were engaged when Mum turned 17years old, before marrying on December 30th 1950 at St Peter and Paul’s Church in Warsop, aged 19, and moving to 3rd Avenue in Clipstone to make their family home.

She worked at the Lawns Mills for a total of 7 years, until the birth of her daughter, my sister, Linda Marjorie in 1954, followed by Martin in 1956, and myself, Robert, in 1965.  During this time she was a full-time Mum, enjoying making clothes for us and making things for around the house too, as well as spending time gardening.

She went back to work when she was 43yrs old, as her good friend Jean got her a job working in the canteen at John T Rice – she very much enjoyed this job, which lead to strong relationships with colleagues there who went on to become good friends for years to come.  Unfortunately, following an injury at work, her career here was ended.

Mum had a real bond with my Aunty Jean.  Aunty Jean, Uncle Jim, Ian and our family enjoyed holidays all around the UK; and when the family got older, Mum, Dad, Aunty Jean and Uncle Jim enjoyed venturing abroad for holidays as well.

Mum lost her lifelong friend Jean suddenly and her sister Enid in 1994 – two people who were very important in her life.  She suffered with her mobility in the later years, they made the decision to move to Eastfield Close in 2004 where her and Dad already had many friends, and made many more.  They enjoyed together many social events and trips out organised through the Eastfield Centre until our Dad passed away in 2009.  Following this, the friends they had made on Eastfield Close provided her with lots of support and company, right up until her passing in January 2022.
